David Harris

OMAHA, Neb. – Southern Arkansas senior shortstop David Harris has been added to the 2013 Tino Martinez Award Watch List as it was announced by College Baseball Lineup on Sunday evening.

Harris, who leads NCAA Division II and the Great American Conference (GAC) in doubles with 20, is among 60 players from DII to appear on this updated watch list. Harris, a native of Houston, Texas, was not on the original watch list released in mid-February, but his stellar year at the plate this season has garnered Harris this national recognition.

To date, Harris' hits (55), homeruns (7), doubles (20), triples (4), runs batted in (44), total bases (104), and slugging percentage (.712) are among the top three in each category in the GAC.

The Tino Martinez Award, which is in its fourth year, is given annually by College Baseball Lineup to the Division II National Player of the Year, as it is voted on by a panel of Division II baseball media and coaches from across the nation.

Southern Arkansas has had one player advance to be a finalist for the award as former starting pitcher Hayden Simpson was runner up for the award in its inaugural year of 2010.

The 2013 watch list, which was compiled by initial nominations from sports information directors, coaches, and media members, is now comprised of 60 of the top players in Division II.

Semifinalists for the award will be announced on May 6, 2013.

Roadrunners to conclude road trip at Lamar on Wednesday evening

SAN ANTONIO — UTSA will wrap up a four-game road trip on Wednesday evening at former Southland Conference foe Lamar. First pitch is slated for 5 p.m. at Vincent-Beck Stadium.

RJ Perucki led the Birds at the plate last weekend by hitting .400 (4-for-10) with a home run and two RBIs. The Tomball native, who has reached base in 27 consecutive games, is hitting .375 overall with team highs in doubles (10), home runs (9), RBIs (33) and total bases (91). Meanwhile, John Welborn will bring a team-leading 13-game hitting streak into Tuesday's tilt.

The two teams, who will meet for the 53rd time in the all-time series on Wednesday, have split the first 52 tilts. The Roadrunners have won five of the last seven matchups, but they lost two of three to the Cardinals last season in the Alamo City.
